Its design uses innovative materials that make this ankle high boot both waterproof and breathable, and a sole designed for groundfeel, flexibility and great grip on natural surfaces.
Features
-
The uppers are made from Xero’s tight-weave abrasion-resistant, yet breathable mesh upper so you’ll have a truly dry & happy experience
-
Vegan
-
eVent® BIO technology is a vegan material used for the fully waterproof lining, and it’s moisture wicking and breathable to keep you comfortable all day
-
The thin Michelin fiberlite technology in the sole gives unparalleled strength, flexibility, and lightness.
-
Plus, with mud-shedding lugs inspired by Michelin’s high-performance mountain bike tires, you feel the confidence that comes with incredible grip.
-
Includes a gaiter hook where you can attach a gaiter for extra water protection above the gussets.
-
Gusseted tongue and lacing hooks at the top for a great fit over the foot that doesn’t let water in.
-
Lightweight construction with an illusive cup-like sole that comes up around the side of the foot, so the sole is thinner than it looks!
-
Zero drop
-
Optional Ortholite based zero drop insole- adds an extra layer of protection from jagged terrain when you need it, or remove for a more barefoot feeling.
-
Flexible lugged soles have great flexibility and groundfeel, while providing grip on uneven and soft natural surfaces like muddy trails.
Sizing
Most of our customers take their regular size in the Scrambler Mid II WP. To see what we mean by regular size, check out our sizing guide.
Xero Shoes uses US gendered sizing for this model.
If you want to translate between men’s and women’s sizes for this model, there’s a 1.5 size difference in length (a men’s 8 would be as long as a women’s 9.5, for example). Men’s sizes are wider and taller in the forefoot, midfoot, heel and ankle.
Fit Notes:
- We do not expect the materials to stretch out, but they may become more soft and supple as they break in
- Footprint shape: rectangular, there is only a slight difference between the width at the heel and the width at the toebox
- Volume: average to high
- Width: due to the rectangular footprint shape, the toebox is considered average to narrow, but the midfoot and heel are average to wide
- You can adjust the fit with the lacing, however those with extra high volume feet may want to size up to get your feet in as gussets can occasionally make that more difficult
- Toebox shape: sloping
- Width in the forefoot area is: centred. There is no extra width for the big toe side, nor for the pinky toe side. They have a rectangular shape overall
- Folks with a square forefoot/toe shape may want to size up to accommodate that
Ground feel
The Scrambler Mid II WP has great flexibility and groundfeel for a hiking boot.
Instead of heavy and stiff soles like most conventional hiking boots employ, the Michelin soles use Fiberlite technology to make the soles strong and durable while maintaining flexibility and lightness.
While they don’t compare to the extra thin and flexible soles of barefoot training shoes, they have a lot more movement opportunity and feeling than your conventional hiking boot, and even compared to some of our other hiking models. The stack height is around 1cm, and the soles will bend and flex as you move in different directions on various surfaces.
If you are used to extremely stiff, supportive, heeled boots, you might not want to break these in on a trail that’s a challenge for you. It takes some time for your feet to become stronger and start working with the terrain instead of against it. Shorter hikes on milder terrains are a good idea, you can always alternate between these and your conventional hikers to stay within your limits as they gradually evolve.
If you are used to the most barefoot feeling shoes, these will have just a touch of cushion and structure for you. That makes it easier to increase endurance on the trail and avoid discomfort from rocky areas.
Care
Rinse off the outside of the shoe as needed- they’re waterproof! You can spot clean with a mild cleanser for any stubborn spots. Xero suggests that you can hand wash these if necessary. Allow to air dry.
Best uses
The Scrambler Mid II WP is our pick for trails and parks when you’re tackling inclement weather. Walking your dog in the early morning dew? Yes. Trekking to camp through a muddy trail? Absolutely. Commuting in the rain? Sure!
Wearing these on concrete and asphalt everyday may increase wear and tear to the lugs, making them less effective over the long term. Once in a while is totally fine though.
Xero’s choices to work with Michelin and other innovative fabricators has led to a waterproof hiking boot that is lightweight, breathable, flexible, and holds true to their values as feet first footwear. We’re expecting these to set the bar in hiking options for the next few years!
